## What It Is

Will set out for a short walk in San Francisco and ended up walking for nine hours, reaching the Golden Gate Bridge. He had even set a stopping point: “I explicitly said, 'I'm going to stop at three hours,' but then I just continued onward”. The hard part had been leaving, not continuing.

> "IMPORTANT SYSTEM INFO UPDATE: My failure mode is more never starting than failing to continue. Once I get started, it's hard to stop — one 10 minute walk can turn into 18 miles. My systems should optimize for ignition, not perfect planning."

That observation changes what a behavioral system needs to do. If work rarely starts but continues easily once underway, more accountability for finishing addresses the wrong difficulty. The useful intervention gets the person across the initial threshold.

**Ignition pressure** starts work. **Selection pressure** judges it through standards, taste, criticism and review. The world supplies selection pressure abundantly; ignition pressure is often missing. Increasing the standard a task must meet does not supply the energy to begin it.

A process has a boot cost and a runtime cost. When boot cost dominates, its schedule needs to be organized around launching it. [Activation Energy](/wiki/activation-energy) develops the thresholds, willpower units and Boltzmann distribution behind that cost. The practical consequence here is to design warm-ups, resets and first actions for a person whose failure mode is never starting, while removing duration goals that make starting harder.

## Two Pressures, Not One

Missing output often prompts stricter deadlines or more self-criticism. Those responses judge the absence of work, but a person may already judge that absence intensely. Will described having more than enough of this pressure:

> "There's a selection pressure every day. I have a natural tendency to already have that, so I don't need that... So I already have the immense selection pressure in my mind. I need the ignition pressure. That's what we need. We need the ignition pressure. That's what I lack."

| | Selection pressure | Ignition pressure |
|---|---|---|
| Function | It evaluates and filters existing work. | It starts work that does not yet exist. |
| Supply | The world, market and inner critic provide it freely. | It has to be deliberately created. |
| Effect at the start | It raises the perceived standard for beginning. | It helps cross the threshold. |
| Result when absent | Work is poor. | Work is absent. |
| Tools | Standards, review, criticism and taste | Warm-ups, checklists, habit trackers and respawn protocols |

Will attributed the difficulty to a conditioned pattern:

> "I have anti-ignition, like that's just the way it is. It is hard for me basically due to conditioning and existing neurological structures. That's what prevents me from starting is because mainly history of not starting. So I need to find workarounds."

A history of not starting can leave structures that make the next start difficult. That diagnosis points toward a workaround. [Calling it a character defect](/wiki/moralizing-vs-mechanistic) supplies no comparable intervention; [Laziness](/wiki/laziness) makes the same distinction between judging a person and identifying a system parameter.

Deadlines, accountability partners, public commitments and review schedules mostly raise the cost of having failed to do something. For an ignition-limited person, that adds judgment without supplying start energy. A checklist naming the first action, a tracker whose first check leads to the next, or a warm-up with no performance demand changes the conditions of beginning directly.

## The Asymmetry: Never-Starting, Not Failing-to-Continue

The walk made the difference between starting and continuing difficult to miss:

> "For me, I can't ever stop, so if I can find one small entry point and remind myself that all I need is one small entry point... it kind of turns into a fucking nine hour thing, like with no effort, and that's because you just basically find your rhythm."

Persistence tools address a problem Will did not observe in these sessions. Streaks, duration targets and outcome goals also gave him more to compare himself against before he began:

> "One of the things that holds me back is having goals... What I realize about my system is I should make my system all about starting. Like ignition, or only focusing on the shit in front of you. Once I start I can't stop."

A goal becomes a selection criterion when the person measures the current session against it. At the threshold, this consumes attention that needs to support the start. The corresponding rules restrict how much future work is present in the decision:

- The plan covers the next 15 minutes. “Planning too far ahead creates self-judgment against the plan.”
- Entry is the measured event. A 3-minute gym visit counts because it is “training entry and threshold-crossing.”
- The daily question specifies a start: “The question for me, mostly today, every day is like: what do I want to start today?... I think that is a key ignition sentence. The better I can articulate that, the closer I am to ignition.”
- A purchase can be worthwhile solely because it enables that start. “Insight: if it gets me started doing something, it is worth paying for.” When ignition is the bottleneck, buying it is cheap at almost any price.

Even deciding to concentrate on ignition can remain too abstract. Will gave it an immediate action and a time boundary:

> "Understanding it and doing it is a very different thing... The easiest thing is to fire up Claude... spend fifteen minutes. So we need a time bound."

### The Starter Motor

An internal combustion engine can produce hundreds of horsepower while running but cannot make its first rotation from rest. Fuel injection, compression and timing depend on an already-turning crankshaft. A separate starter motor supplies those initial revolutions; it has no role in driving the vehicle afterward.

For a century, people started engines with hand cranks and treated the difficulty as a matter of character. Adding a dedicated starter removed the need to keep overcoming that difficulty manually. The analogy applies to someone capable of eighteen-mile walks and nine-hour work sessions once moving. Warm-ups, mantras, identity cues and counted entries perform a distinct starting function. Greater capacity during the session would not replace it.

The next design question is what happens after entry. A walk becomes increasingly costly to end because returning requires a conscious choice and the distance home grows. [Container Design](/wiki/container-design) uses that structural momentum to keep a session going after ignition has done its work.

## Warm-Up Is Identity Loading

Will came to treat the morning routine as preparation for a mental state as well as a physical one:

> "I always assumed warming up was physical... but it's actually mental. It's almost like mental and physical, they're the same... I need to consider my morning routine is a warm-up for the day."

> "I see that the first five minutes kind of always suck... so we will set the first five minutes to be warm up, lightweight, just to reactivate the identity, to just load the system prompt — because it's like context switching until you can feel like you can immediately go."

In this model, identity is a program that can be loaded and can decay when unused. It filters available actions according to what feels like something this person does:

> "Identity is the ultimate system. It's because it's you as a system, it's the system prompt that you are running. So if I think in terms of identity, I need to basically have a filter to choose which actions I do. Because they feel aligned. But they also need to feel like something I decided."

Once that filter is active, the question of what to do next is partly answered. A [state transition](/wiki/state-machines) that would otherwise require a decision is preselected, removing the willpower payment. Keeping the identity available depends on presence more than performance.

| Operation | What maintains or changes the identity | Will's example |
|---|---|---|
| Install | A few consistent visits supply evidence; output is irrelevant. | “I went to the gym three times now. I'm a gym goer.” |
| Load each day | A lightweight first five minutes makes the identity active. | “Reactivate the identity, load the system prompt” |
| Keep available | Attendance, payment and other evidence keep it on the palette. | “I'm paying a hundred thirty dollars a month, so it's just to keep that fit identity. As long as I keep the identity, I know I can lose weight.” |
| Restore after decay | Light “noob sets” reacclimate the person without a performance requirement. | “It's not about — I already have the muscle, already have the training knowledge. It's more about bringing back online this identity that, you know, I go somewhere to get shit done.” |

Will reported installing an identity in roughly three repetitions:

> "As soon as I just enter the gym for like five minutes, I flip my mind to: oh, I'm a gym person. That's my superpower — I adopt the new identity very fast. Like, oh, I play ping pong once, now I'm a ping pong star. A lot of people need many, many months, but immediately, once I find something, I attach my identity to it... It works in a positive way but also works badly too."

The speed works in either direction: a bad loop can install a bad identity just as quickly. That makes the evidence being repeated consequential even when each instance seems small.

A gym visit “without any purpose, just as a load-bearing identity creation” keeps the identity present. Judged only by workout output, the visit can look wasted. Its function is to make future starts in that domain cheap; when the identity falls out of use, each start becomes expensive again.

## LARPing as Context Loading

An intention alone does not install the corresponding state. The mind needs consequences it can observe:

> "It's not just about intention; it's about implementation. It's about the mechanism. And the mechanism has been revealed to me... you set the intention, but you have to also set the other consequences as if that intention were real. And then your mind will infer that and align with that shape."

Acting the role provides those consequences before the feeling has arrived:

> "LARPing is actually the most powerful thing, where you can swap out the context that was immediate, that was plaguing you, and then load this into your mind."

[The mind updates from evidence](/wiki/predictive-coding), including actual behavior and environmental conditions. Producing evidence of the intended state gives it something to infer from. The same applies to relaxing a constraint such as worry about money:

> "You can't suspend or relax the condition unless you actually do things that assume the conditions are relaxed, so that your mind is able to actually enter that mental state."

Will also found a spoken step necessary: “I need to talk about it before I do it, I can't just think it and do it.” Talking a plan [out loud](/wiki/the-braindump) creates audible words. Walking the route or recording the plan gives the mind further consequences to observe. These actions can return as context in [working memory](/wiki/working-memory). [EV-Sensor Calibration](/wiki/ev-sensor-calibration) describes the related change in felt value: lived exposure reprograms the sensor, while information alone does not.

## Doubt Scripts Fire at the Threshold

“I wouldn't buy what I've made” and “Who would trust me though?” can appear just as the next action becomes publishing, sending a DM or shipping something. The timing identifies these low-cost thoughts as responses to the high activation cost of the action ahead. They provide avoidance rather than information about the world.

Judging is cheaper than starting, so abundant selection pressure can fill the gap where ignition is missing. Genuine evaluation examines completed work; these doubts occur before crossing a threshold. [Procrastination](/wiki/procrastination) can take this intellectual form, as can the [demons](/wiki/demons) that seem to speak in one's own voice.

Pre-start dread makes a similar substitution. It feels like a forecast of the activity, but measures the experience of standing before it. A walk that seems intolerable from the couch can become hard to stop ninety seconds after leaving. The feeling before entry does not survive [contact with the activity](/wiki/reality-contact); it extrapolates from the wrong side of the boundary. Under this rule, pre-start affect is inadmissible evidence about how the activity will feel. The valid measurement comes from inside it.

“Just start” can make this worse by implying that starting should already have happened:

> "'Just start' can open up too many interpretations, often moralistic, causing a loop of not starting because I'm judging myself for my inability. What is needed is mechanistic phrasing: focus only on starting, don't worry about how long you continue, focus only on the act of beginning... If thoughts about doing it for a certain amount of time creep up, overwrite with 'ignition only, ignition, ignition.'"

“Focus only on starting” supplies a bounded operation without a verdict about previous failure. A [willpower](/wiki/willpower) framing instead spends scarce units fighting the doubt after invoking it. The phrasing matters because it can determine whether judgment enters the starting decision at all.

## Cognitive Warm-Up: Run Out the Wastewater

The first minutes of thinking can be rambling and awkward, even nauseating, before useful work begins:

> "It's really important to get, as they say, to run out the wastewater, so that I can get into clearer thoughts... now that I've cleared off the bad water — the beginning thoughts — the journal is going more fluidly."

The pipe comparison explains why those minutes belong in the process. Water that has stood in a pipe is flushed before drinking; the early thoughts clear material that would otherwise obstruct the session. “I just need to spend this time to clear out the backwater” describes that purpose. Evaluating the opening as finished work mistakes preparation for the output it makes possible.

In the [retrospective mode](/wiki/generative-vs-retrospective), a poor first five minutes can cause the session to be abandoned. A generative session allows those minutes to happen:

> "The hardest part is the first 5-10 minutes. Once you get past the 5-minute mark, the 10-minute mark, it just starts going into automatic mode."

“Some noob sets to acclimate your mind” applies to cognition as well as the gym. The opening sets are deliberately light, and their output is never evaluated. The first ten minutes carry the difficulty; afterward [rhythm](/wiki/rhythm) supplies continuation.

## Daily Respawn: Yesterday Is an Illusion

Yesterday's failure can enter the morning as evidence against the identity needed today. A reset prevents that history from becoming another starting cost. Will used a morning mantra:

> "Everything you did yesterday doesn't count. It's an illusion — only stuff you do from now on matters. Everything you did yesterday is an illusion, and somebody else's — imagine in a video game, and then you just plugged in and you're just playing."

The game frame asks for the best action available from the present body, resources and circumstances:

> "You need to maximize your score given the current procedures, current body, what you are right now. Your last two hours doesn't matter. You can always snap out of it."

The [accrual substrate](/wiki/accrual-substrate) retains the real history for evening review. The current session does not have to load its failures to use that record later. This is a separation between doing the work and assessing the history of the work.

The mantra also completes a first small action:

> "The morning mantra eliminates all this stuff in my mind, it kind of reloads that system and gets the first check done — so that it feels like the second check is easy to do. And then the third check is easy to do."

A fixed morning trigger, anchored by a [zeitgeber](/wiki/zeitgebers), makes the reset part of waking rather than another activity waiting to be initiated. The first check then makes the next check easier.

## Scheduling the Two Pressures

Standards still determine whether work is good. They need a time and an object to judge, so selection pressure has a scheduled place after work exists.

| Phase | Pressure | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Ignition | The reset, first check, warm-up and starting question prepare entry. |
| Mid-session | Neither | The generative session continues through rhythm without scoring or comparing it to the plan. |
| Evening review | Selection | The day's record and completed work are assessed. |
| Editing and publishing | Selection | Taste, quality bars and criticism are applied to an existing artifact. |

Selection and ignition are both necessary, but interfere when applied together at the threshold. A scheduled review gives the inner critic a credible “not now, tonight” instead of demanding “never.” [Night Protocols](/wiki/night-protocols) and weekly reviews provide that home. Anything that exists can be evaluated; something that has not started cannot yet be judged as work.

## The Ignition Protocol

Will's N=1 routine puts the operations in this order:

1. **The morning begins with the respawn mantra.** It establishes the current situation as the starting point rather than loading yesterday's verdict.
2. **The cheapest tracker action is checked immediately.** Completion of that first action begins the cascade before the day becomes a large decision.
3. **“What do I want to start today?” specifies an entry.** Articulating the answer brings the intended action closer to execution.
4. **The first five minutes are a light warm-up.** They load the identity and clear early thoughts without an output standard.
5. **The plan stops at 15 minutes.** A longer plan would create a target against which to judge the current session.
6. **Entry counts as the completed repetition.** Three minutes at the gym qualifies; duration and output do not determine whether entry happened.
7. **Duration thoughts receive “ignition only, ignition, ignition.”** The instruction returns attention to beginning before a target length raises the threshold.
8. **Tools that enable a start are worth buying.** A membership, recorder or other aid is valuable for reducing the limiting cost, even before it produces work.
9. **The entry leads into a container.** A walk that requires a deliberate turn back, or a session whose context is already loaded, makes continuation structural and avoids repeated ignition costs.

These steps address history, cold state, ambiguity, self-judgment, output pressure, friction and the cost of starting again. They contain no persistence intervention because persistence was not Will's observed failure mode.

## Failure Modes

| Failure | Why it interferes | Corresponding change |
|---|---|---|
| More standards for a starting problem | The perceived entry requirement rises. | Identify the missing pressure and supply ignition. |
| Duration or outcome goals | A future comparison enters the starting decision. | Limit the plan to 15 minutes and count entry. |
| Evaluation of warm-up output | Preparation is scored as failed production. | Allow the opening minutes to clear the way. |
| Moralizing “Just start” | The instruction carries a judgment about not having started. | Use “ignition only, ignition, ignition.” |
| Believing threshold-timed doubt | Avoidance is treated as evaluation. | Recognize the timing of the script. |
| Yesterday's verdict entering the morning | Failure history weakens the identity before entry. | Reset the session while the substrate retains the record. |
| Unused identities decaying | Each entry becomes a cold start. | Maintain attendance and other evidence. |
| Believing pre-start dread | A threshold feeling is projected onto the activity. | Measure from inside the activity. |

These failures have two roots: judgment at the threshold and an unwarmed state. There is no third failure in this account. Guarding the threshold and preparing the state therefore covers the whole failure surface. Persistence machinery actively interferes here because every such instrument is a duration goal in disguise.

## Integration with the Mechanistic Framework

### Connection to [Activation Energy](/wiki/activation-energy)

Activation Energy supplies the thresholds, resource costs, bridge scripts and Boltzmann distribution. Once observation shows that boot cost dominates while runtime cost rounds to zero, those costs imply concentrating the budget on starts and deleting persistence machinery.

### Connection to [Container Design](/wiki/container-design)

A container makes stopping costly after the start. Together, ignition and container design explain how a ten-minute walk becomes eighteen miles without requiring repeated decisions to persist.

### Connection to [Generative vs Retrospective](/wiki/generative-vs-retrospective)

Retrospective judgment evaluates the warm-up, early thoughts and previous failures while the current work is still forming. Holding the generative mode postpones that evaluation until there is an artifact to assess.

### Connection to [Be the Sun](/wiki/be-the-sun)

A person who starts generating can leave capture and downstream processing to surrounding systems. The person's role is to begin the emission; the systems preserve and process what follows.

### Connection to [State Machines](/wiki/state-machines) and [Rhythm](/wiki/rhythm)

A loaded identity selects transitions without a separate willpower payment. Rhythm maintains the automatic continuation that appears after the first ten minutes.
