# Planning Euphoria

## What It Is

A planning session can end with the satisfaction of a completed project even when none of the planned work has happened. Deciding what to do resolves uncertainty, and a clear list can bring relief or elation. Those feelings do not distinguish between finishing a project and describing how it could be finished.

**Planning euphoria** occurs when that reward arrives during planning and consumes the motivation that execution needed. The outcome has already become clear in the planner's model, so the payoff intended for delivery is collected in simulation. Once collected, it cannot be collected again. Execution then offers cost without an expected new signal, because the result is already predicted.

The timing distinguishes this mechanism from the [precondition trap](/wiki/precondition-trap). Planning euphoria concerns when the payoff arrives. The precondition trap concerns what someone builds in place of the intended act, often using the energy that planning supplies.

## The Type Specimen

On one documented day, an all-day planning session produced thirty urgent issues. The plan was good: it decomposed what the project needed and put the work in priority order. Producing it felt like a breakthrough. A six-hour hike followed, then a nine-hour walk. None of the thirty issues was ever executed.

After encountering similar cases, Will recorded:

> "A plan discharges nothing… The energy exists at plan-time and is gone by morning — spend it while it exists."

The plan had produced no completed issue or shipped artifact, but naming the problems had relieved the planner's sense of unfinished work. In this account, the walks were the dissipation that follows a reward, rather than avoidance of a task whose reward was still ahead.

Calling the aftermath laziness misses when the motivation was spent. The energy to act had been present during the session, but making the plan consumed it. By morning, rereading the list could not restore the payoff already obtained from producing it. The issues remained urgent in the project while no longer exerting the same pull on the person who had written them.

## Why It Feels Like Progress

[Dopamine systems](/wiki/dopamine-systems) describes reward signals in terms of prediction error. Through temporal-difference learning, the burst moves from a reward to the earliest cue that reliably predicts it. Applied to planning, this provides a model for why an internal change can feel like completed work.

An ambiguous problem becomes something the planner can name. Choosing an approach resolves another uncertainty, and enumerating the steps resolves another. Each closure supplies a positive prediction error inside the simulation. By the end, the intended outcome is fully specified and therefore fully predicted. Executing the first of thirty items offers an expected reward, which produces no new burst. Describing the work has consumed the anticipatory pull that would have helped fund it.

This is a model applied to behavior, not a claim that anyone measured the planner's neurons. Its value here is that it predicts the observed sequence: satisfaction at the end of planning, followed by little motivation to carry out the plan.

Renaming can produce the same sequence on a smaller scale. One documented project went through six names, including three renames in a single month, while the underlying work stayed unchanged. Each name felt clearer than the last. Because no buyer had responded to the work, none of those judgments had an external test that could stop the naming cycle. The rule that ended it was:

> "Names are free until they precede a sale; a rename that substitutes for an unfired send is the old loop."

Restarts provided another version. A fresh, more concise account of what had gone wrong justified starting over, but the first act of the restart was another examination of the past. The improved explanation supplied a sense of coherence without any demonstrated change in behavior or contact with someone outside the project.

[Coherence is not evidence](/wiki/coherence-is-not-evidence) examines what happens when that signal is mistaken for knowledge. "This feels done" reports that an internal search has ended; it does not report a change in the world. Planning euphoria describes the motivational consequence of the same substitution. A regulatory signal calms the system whether the belief has been tested or the plan delivered. A [counterparty](/wiki/counterparty) who pays or declines supplies an external judgment that can distinguish the jolt of clarity from progress.

## The Knowing-Doing Twins

The reward can also arrive when someone knows a solution that they have not used. Will described this recurring confusion:

> "I always fall into the trap of 'okay, I know what to do = doing it.' ... as long as the solution is articulable in memory and pleasing, it does not register as an actual problem that deserves attention."

A problem with an answer already available in memory no longer registers as unresolved. The attention system triages by prediction error, and the model presents that problem as solved. A later observation identified what was being retained:

> "What other things have I been neglecting because they've lived in my head as a cognitive pointer—because I could always articulate how to solve it, it registered as solved?"

A one-sentence solution to a recurring meal problem remained unused for months. Will could always state the solution, so the problem never resurfaced as something requiring attention. A cognitive pointer is a useful description of that arrangement: the answer is available to retrieve, but retrieving an answer and carrying it out are different operations.

The mistake is to experience an available answer as an executed one. The reward arrived when the answer became articulable; keeping it available afterward supplies neither a new payoff nor a prompt to act. A daily cadence that requires the solution to be carried out forces the pointer to be used. It applies the conversion rule on a schedule instead of depending on the problem to feel unresolved again.

## Theorizing Is Compute Spend

Plans, names, and remembered solutions are particular cases of cognition being counted as completed work:

> "Theorizing, it's just like a cognitive thread… equal to spending compute resources, there's nothing genuinely true about it."

Thinking uses computational resources. It can be worthwhile expenditure, since hypotheses have to be developed somewhere, but the satisfaction it produces establishes neither its truth nor its effect on the world.

> "You can read all you want about making money but it doesn't really affect your EV because they all feel virtual, because none of it is grounded in lived experience."

Facts learned without corresponding experience remain virtual in the [EV sensors](/wiki/ev-sensor-calibration). More reading can therefore leave someone feeling one book short of being ready, even as their account of the subject becomes more elaborate.

A detailed analysis can also exceed what the available evidence supports. In one documented AI session, the analysis had reached elaborate protocols for examining a failed experiment, although the experiment had sent zero messages. Will interrupted it:

> "you are operating at an undeserved resolution — why are we zooming in this much detail ... What do you want to see before you tell me this is worth turning into a platform?"

The detail supplied the reward while implying a degree of grounding that the sample count did not justify. Even an analysis advocating contact with reality can substitute for contact if the session keeps refining the analysis instead of making the first attempt.

## Differential Diagnosis: Not Procrastination

[Procrastination](/wiki/procrastination) and planning euphoria can both leave work untouched, but they fail at different points. In procrastination, the work script does not load, so a default such as phone use or lounging runs instead. The motivation remains present but does not overcome the starting threshold.

With planning euphoria, sufficient motivation was available and was spent during the plan. The resulting feeling is satisfaction rather than aversion. That difference changes which intervention addresses the failure.

The mechanisms can combine. After a plan has consumed the anticipatory reward, beginning the work the next morning becomes harder. The predicted outcome supplies no further pull, leaving willpower to cover the full activation cost.

Under this model, planning at night for execution in the morning is close to the worst timing. It collects the reward while energy is at its maximum, then postpones the cost until the pull is at its minimum. A starting-cost intervention and a reward-timing intervention address different parts of that sequence.

## The Conversion Rule

Planning remains necessary because a desired outcome has to be decomposed into work that can be performed. The change is to include execution in the planning session, while the motivation that made the plan possible is still available.

- **Every planning session produces one external artifact that day.** A sent message, a shipped commit, or a completed first item gives the session a result outside the planner's head. The available window is hours rather than days.
- **The first item is performed inside the session.** Listing it as tomorrow's first task postpones the work past the reward. Performing it during the session lets the same energy fund an attempt and produces feedback that further planning cannot supply.
- **A session with no conversion is recorded as entertainment.** Planning can be an enjoyable activity. Counting it as recreation keeps the record honest; counting it as completed work creates an expanding gap between the record and what has happened.

The instruction "The energy exists at plan-time and is gone by morning — spend it while it exists" sets the timing of that conversion. It also prevents the plan from receiving credit for a result that remains only specified.

[Coherence is not evidence](/wiki/coherence-is-not-evidence) reaches the same intervention through its Trigger 3 protocol, which ends a long generation session "with a probe, not a conclusion." In a belief-focused session, the probe tests the belief; in a planning session, the first completed act tests the plan. An unconverted session can at least specify the cheapest external contact, but that contact has to happen before the session's satisfaction is counted as evidence or work.
