# Reality Contact Metabolism

## What It Is

Too much time thinking about a project can change more than the accuracy of your plans. Will describes becoming anxious, unable to estimate what an action is worth, and caught in scenarios that never reach a conclusion. Doing the actual work changes both what he knows and how he feels.

[Reality contact](/wiki/reality-contact) explains the first part: feedback from the world calibrates a model and stops it drifting through unchecked simulation. **Reality contact metabolism** concerns the second. Contact is a physiological requirement that behaves like a nutrient, with recognizable deficiency symptoms, a felt experience of receiving it, and a dose-response pattern. Deprivation makes the mind anxious, paranoid and eventually depressed. Supplying contact stabilizes the same mind without changing its willpower, intelligence or insight.

The nutrition language is a heuristic transferred from another domain, not a biochemical claim that contact is literally a metabolite. The proposed similarity is structural: deprivation produces a predictable pattern of decline, supply produces recovery, and the symptoms point toward the missing input. That pattern matches Will's observed experience closely enough to guide action.

The computational account concerns a generative model running without outside feedback. It accumulates unresolved states as well as errors. Scenarios branch without an external event to end them, probability estimates lose their anchors, and anxiety rises because nothing is confirmed or falsified. Anxiety functions as the alarm for the missing input.

The two questions therefore serve different purposes. "Is my model calibrated?" asks about the reliability of an estimate. "Am I fed?" asks whether the system has received the contact it needs. In this account, anxiety, grandiosity and low motivation are readouts of that supply rather than measures of character.

## The Deficiency Syndrome

Model drift has an experience from the inside. Will described a recurring cluster:

> "Excess time in map mode leads predictably to anxiety, inability to calibrate EV sensors, infinite simulation depth, paranoia, and depression. Reality contact is also rooted in getting lifeblood."

The proposed mechanisms connect each symptom to an absence of outside feedback:

The comparison with a deficiency such as scurvy concerns this recurring pattern, rather than a vague claim that contact is beneficial. Will stated the intuition more strongly:

> "You need the reality contact like you need nutrition. You literally need reality contact to live and feel. Strong intuition: a root of depression may be lack of contact with reality."

Contact also constrains the self-model. Will calls it "a controlling factor / harness / attenuator that keeps the self-model in check." Without that constraint, the model can become grandiose on a good day or catastrophic on a bad one. These are two expressions of the same deficiency at different [dopaminergic](/wiki/dopamine-systems) baselines. An unchecked [simulation](/wiki/the-matrix) can expand in either direction because nothing outside it forces a correction.

## Anxiety Is a Sixth Sense

Will's phrase "anxiety is a sixth sense for lack of reality contact" treats the feeling as a sensor for a deficit. The useful detail is that it can identify which contact is missing:

> "Anxiety is not only a sign that I have not been touching reality, but also a signal for what is missing. What would make me less anxious: having the exact [project] spec written down, and having a script so I have something for the teleprompter."

The missing project specification and teleprompter script are concrete objects that do not yet exist. Inspecting the anxiety identifies work that would change the situation, rather than merely producing a description of the feeling.

The [anxiety](/wiki/anxiety) article develops the general gap between simulation and reality. The addition here is that the signal has an address: it points toward a particular untouched thing, as hunger for a specific food points toward a specific deficiency.

That changes the proposed order of action. Waiting for the nerves to settle before beginning leaves the missing input missing.

> "The nerves kind of never go away — they only go away once you start doing it. Don't try to calm nerves before starting… Anxiety [and] fear come from thinking and talking about the thing too much instead of going deep into it. It disappears after 15–20 minutes."

The causality runs from contact to relief. Fifteen to twenty minutes of doing the thing, rather than preparing to do it or trying to soothe the nerves beforehand, clears the alarm. The connection to [ignition](/wiki/ignition) follows: starting matters because it is when the deficit begins to clear.

"What have I not touched?" asks a different question from "how do I feel better?" The first seeks the object that would close the gap. Will describes the accumulation as "if you overuse your cognition without reality contact, there's like an anxiety bar" and the relief as "and how you get rid of that is basically closing the gap between your thinking and reality." Each unchecked inference fills the bar; contact drains it.

His account of focus follows the same causal order: "the biggest problem in my life is not focus, it is anxiety. If anxiety is fixed, focus comes naturally." [Focus](/wiki/focus) problems are frequently anxiety problems, and those anxiety problems are frequently contact deficits. Investigating the missing contact addresses the cause underneath the difficulty concentrating.

## The Antaeus Condition

In the Greek myth, Antaeus regained his strength whenever he touched the earth, his mother Gaia. Heracles could not defeat him by wrestling him to the ground. He won by lifting him off it and holding him away until his strength faded.

The mechanism is the connection. A throw that looked like defeat renewed Antaeus's supply; prolonged separation removed it. More grit would not have replaced the ground.

The same structure describes an intelligent person isolated inside an attractive simulation or protected from correction by an ego that refuses outside judgment. The person weakens while separated from the necessary input and can mistake that weakening for a failure of character. The intervention is renewed contact, just as the myth turns on contact with the earth.

## Intelligence Upstream Is a Liability

The effect of intelligence depends on where it operates in the loop.

> "Intelligence becomes a liability when it operates upstream of reality contact and an asset when it operates downstream of reality contact. The move is contact first, intelligence second."

Before contact, intelligence can elaborate plans and repair their internal contradictions without obtaining any evidence that the plans fit the world. After contact, it can interpret what happened and design a more informative next attempt.

The same ability has opposite effects in the two positions. Will found the feeling of brilliance useful as a warning:

> "When I feel like I'm a genius, it's usually because of lack of reality contact. Not that being a genius is bad; it's just like it's another signal now… I can see this as a diagnostic signal."

Feeling like a genius is the grandiose form of the deficiency described earlier. Internal coherence has begun to stand in for truth. His own check was explicit: "my world model, although sophisticated and internally coherent, has a big potential to be very wrong. And it needs to have constant contact with reality."

He gave himself an abrasive instruction to counter that overconfidence: "you need to realize you're retarded and calculate how much you're retarded." Introspection cannot supply the calibration because it consults the same ungrounded model. The relevant count is how many predictions have recently collided with the world.

A [predictive-coding](/wiki/predictive-coding) system that has received no recent prediction error has no basis for confidence, however consistent its interior seems. [Clarity Bear](/wiki/clarity-bear) describes the adjacent mistake of treating a clear vision as a valid one.

## The Loop Order

The sequence is **contact first, receive second, process third, act fourth**, then repeat. A strong simulator can reverse it: process, plan, process more, and perhaps act much later. The most expensive place to apply intelligence is before the first contact, while deciding whether contact is worth making. That decision relies on the very model the contact is meant to correct.

The distinction changes what building a product requires:

> "The reason all these little ambitions did not work was constructing systems before contact with reality. Building startup/software with AI feels like a construction exercise because AI can construct high-fidelity things, but the real process is a reality-sampling exercise."

Construction improves an artifact. Sampling improves an estimate of what the artifact needs to be. When AI makes construction nearly free, it becomes easy to keep constructing while avoiding the sampling.

Will described this as "trying to hide behind compute." Compute optimizes a process; optimizing one that has never been run manually "is a form of premature optimization." His division of labor was: "taste gives you a strong prior; reality contact gives you a Bayesian way to get closer to reality." Taste supplies the initial estimate, while contact supplies the update.

The update also requires time with an imperfect attempt. "I don't give things the time they need to be bad" names a way of terminating the experiment before it can teach anything.

This order has an ongoing emotional cost. A generative mind can find its internal simulation more pleasant than reality. Inside it, the work is coherent and the person gets things right; outside it, a half-finished product may be called confusing. Receiving the feedback requires sustained low-grade discomfort. In the metabolic account, that discomfort accompanies receiving the needed input.

## The Confession: Avoidance as Perceived-Utility Failure

Discomfort does not explain every failure to make contact. Will initially described his case as "I thought I saw something others didn't, but really I was avoiding actual contact with the tools." He then identified a more specific cause:

> "I actually don't think it's a 'it feels scary' thing — it's more for me that I didn't think it was necessary. Like literally I thought my model of the world was so complete and so accurate cuz of the work I put in to suss out the imperfections and contradictions in theory and iterations with AI. I don't have a 'fear' of reality contact, I just literally did not perceive its utility."

His model seemed complete because he had worked through its imperfections and contradictions in theory and with AI. As a result, the expected-value calculation assigned no benefit to contact. Fear did not have to intervene; the action already appeared unnecessary.

The account identifies perceived utility and protection from judgment as the more common blockers; fear is rarely the main one. Exposure therapy or "feel the fear and do it anyway" addresses a different variable. [Courage](/wiki/courage) does not correct a belief that an action has nothing to teach you.

There was also a second mechanism beneath that utility estimate:

> "I always thought I'm better than everybody else. So I never wanted to try to put myself in a situation where I could be proven wrong… I never wanted to let anybody tell me I'm wrong, so I always hide and find a way where they cannot prove me wrong."

Avoiding situations that could falsify a favorable self-model protected it from correction. The behavior appeared as omissions: "I would not apply to things. I would not sign up for stuff. I would not let myself get judged… I would not put my thoughts out on Twitter for fear of being judged."

Even the vocabulary served that protection. He resisted the phrase "catch up" because it admitted being behind, "so for the longest time, I just made myself more behind." The protection succeeded at preventing anyone from proving him wrong by cutting off the contact that could have improved the model. In the vocabulary of [demons](/wiki/demons), it presented as confidence while enforcing deprivation.

The replacement policy was to stop rejecting himself in advance and "let reality select me out." Submitting the application lets the actual environment perform a cheaper and more accurate filter than the simulated one.

An outreach letter supplied a concrete counterexample to the internal standard. It felt "shit" to its author and still received a response. The observation was that "the threshold for useful external motion is lower than my internal standard says it is."

## Mental Movies: Simulation Registers as Execution

Vivid simulation can do more than make contact seem unnecessary. It can produce the feeling that the action has already happened.

> "I was thinking about using my home gym despite not actually going, and I felt like I already did it. Because in my mind, I went through the mental movie of doing it."

The mental movie satisfied the intent and lowered the task's urgency while the gym remained unused. Introspection could not audit execution because the simulation had already changed the felt record of what had been done.

The countermeasure is an external record: "if you're a thinker, you need a lot more infrastructure in reality, like tracking infrastructure." [Tracking](/wiki/tracking) that credits only physically executed acts—a timer started, a checkbox checked, a log line written—is the only reliable discriminator between simulation and execution. The [accrual substrate](/wiki/accrual-substrate) supplies a record that the mental movie cannot forge.

Imagined tool use can replace observation in the same way. Will found that "the strongest thing is observing how I actually work and how I actually use it. It's very different than what I imagined myself doing." Prototyping, watching actual use and encountering friction test that imagined account. Trying competing tools also makes it possible to "feel the edge of what they're missing." Imagining a user is still simulation when the imagined user is yourself.

At its strongest, the substitution made imagined constraints hard to distinguish from real ones: "these mental prisons — these are just things in my imagination, but they feel so real. And then I can't really distinguish what is real from what is not. And the only way is contact with reality… I need to just assume that everything I know is wrong." Reasoning conducted inside the same representation cannot supply an outside correction. Contact is what breaks the representation's authority.

Discussing an unlived problem with an LLM adds another layer. The model elaborates a simulation supplied by the person. Imagined customer problems are "vague like an LLM written essay"; real observations have "grounded details where u can feel the texture of it." The generated discussion can be fluent and plausible without producing any prediction error.

The person can also simulate the response to that output. Will caught himself "overoptimizing for feedback I haven't received yet due to mental simulation": he was answering critics who did not yet exist. ## Four Properties of the Nutrient

Four properties determine how contact can be arranged: it carries experience that cannot be simulated, occurs at several layers, produces new questions and can be recorded as executed acts.

### Contact carries unsimulable texture

A map omits dimensions of experience that matter to the person encountering a place. Will described standing in a neighborhood he thought he already knew:

> "You don't see the juxtaposition of certain buildings and their colors and heights, and how they reflect off each other at certain times of the day and light. You don't get the smell, the heat, and the breeze. You don't see the energy of the people in the cafes nearby. You don't see the parallax effect of the different strata of the evolution of the place."

The point concerned reception as well as additional facts: "the point is your consciousness is receptive to certain energies, and you can feel it… you can't compare on that level, because human experience is not just on that level."

A concert differs from its recording, a city from its map, and a customer conversation from a survey. The difference is not simply the amount of data. The embodied channel provides the input described here as nutritional.

AI can serve "as this amazing dynamic map that morphs as you walk… it grounds itself in real time." But "if you use it as itself, you're going to miss out on a lot of depth." A map can help navigate the experience without supplying the experience.

### Contact is layered

Contact with one part of a project does not establish contact with every part. Will observed: "you can have reality contact with the code, but also not reality contact with the world. It actually happens on multiple layers, and you need to look at the macrostate at that level."

Eighteen months of deep engagement with code can coexist with no engagement with the market. Anxiety produced by the missing market contact can then be attributed to the code, the layer where the person has been doing the work. A separate check for each layer makes the missing input visible.

### Contact is question-generative

Contact produces questions that could not have been specified before the encounter.

> "The common thing about reality contact is that it generates questions. It generates questions that are not addressed. It generates branching from the main path… reading about the model does not equate to having the model downloaded and instantiated in your own weights."

The textbook comparison is that the printed words may contain thirty percent of the knowledge. The rest comes from working problems and generating questions "so particular and specific to you that it doesn't make sense to write them down."

This supplies a test for a work session. New, specific, unanswered questions indicate contact with the territory. Finishing with the same beliefs in a more elaborate form indicates that a map was consumed or extended.

The order applies to reading too. On a first reading, you may not know which information matters. After trying the thing, "you know what you're looking for and what information is missing." ### Contact is checklistable

The abstract concept eventually resolved into ordinary actions: "I figured it out intellectually… still talking about it in very abstract terms like reality contact. It's basically doing the thing." Habits checked off, cardio done, training completed, worklogs written and targets hit can each be checked with a yes or no.

Will found the same missing action across otherwise different domains:

> "The deep pattern across fundraising, getting a job, getting a girlfriend, learning PyTorch, reading math, finishing a degree, getting off drugs, getting lean, and asking for what I want was thinking too much about the thing instead of doing the thing. The substitute was elaborate cognition instead of contact."

Fundraising, work, relationships, study, drug use, body composition and asking for something had shared a substitution: elaborate thought took the place of the act. The intervention can therefore be checked daily across those domains. A checklist accepting only executed acts cannot be satisfied by a mental movie.

That also changed the meaning of a familiar slogan: "I think I understand what 'you can just do things' means now — it's not really about agency, it's more about reality contact." In this account, the people who do things are sustained by contact rather than distinguished by greater bravery. The supply keeps further action inexpensive.

## Maximize the Contact Surface

The design objective is to increase the number and bandwidth of channels through which reality reaches the system. The bottleneck is contact, rather than compute.

Will applies this to building a personal AI: "I am trying to maximize the reality-contact surface that AI has, because I feel like the bottleneck is not really compute." A model with great computational capacity but no outside contact reproduces the isolated person's problem at a larger scale. There is an output side too. Authority comes from "living in the territory and reporting back": describing experiments actually run and findings that surprised the person who encountered them. Such reports carry the texture of direct experience and are recognizable as alpha. Publishing them also opens a new channel. Readers respond, and their responses provide more incoming information.

Will used a botanical image for this exchange:

> "I think of myself as a branching thing with roots and tentacles reaching into reality… Reality is updating you. It's cleaning your mental models. It is providing you nutrition and it's providing you information about what exists in the network and who needs what."

Nothing grown in isolation survives introduction to its environment. "You cannot grow something in isolation and then introduce it to the environment — it will die, because it was not adapted to that environment."

Products, skills, identities and essays therefore have to grow within the environments in which they will live. Daily exchange lets those environments shape them from the beginning. The change in what counts as an advantage follows from this: "the surface area of reality you cover, not the elegance of the solution."

## The Daily Contact Audit

A complete cycle records an observation, captures what happened, processes the notes and turns the result into changes to the system. Contact without capture helps the current moment without improving the stored base. Capture without processing hoards material. Processing without changing the system loses the lesson.

The daily audit makes that cycle concrete:

1. **Anxiety identifies a missing contact.** Instead of treating the feeling as something to soothe first, the audit asks which untouched thing it points to and records that object.
2. **Each layer gets a separate execution check.** Craft, market, social life and the body each receive a yes or no for an act performed today. An imagined act counts as zero.
3. **Grandiosity becomes a diagnostic entry.** Feeling like a genius is recorded as a deficiency flag, followed by a falsifiable action such as shipping, posting, asking or applying.
4. **An avoided contact begins with 15–20 minutes.** The commitment is to start and run the timer. The nerves dissolve after that threshold, without needing to believe beforehand that they will.
5. **Pending self-rejections go to reality.** The unsent application, unpublished draft or unasked question is submitted so that the external filter can replace the simulated rejection.
6. **One action adds a lasting channel.** A recording pipeline, standing meeting or published artifact that invites replies increases permanent contact surface. That surface compounds; an isolated touch does not.
