# The Simulated Other

## What It Is

Before asking someone a question, you can already hear their answer. It may arrive in their voice, with plausible objections and the certainty of something remembered. Yet the person has not answered.

The **simulated other** is that internally generated person: a model supplying the reaction, verdict or response in place of the actual encounter.

[Coherence Is Not Evidence](/wiki/coherence-is-not-evidence) gives the underlying distinction. Coherence belongs to a story; evidence comes from the world. When the missing evidence is another person's answer, the mind fills the gap rather than leaving it visibly blank.

Will noticed the contradiction in his own speech:

> "I have no idea what somebody else is going to say, and I do not know if they will pay — the only way to find out is to ask them, but I only know what they are GOING to say."

He did not know what the person would say because he had never asked. He knew what they were going to say because the simulation had already produced it. The certainty is real; its referent is the rendering.

## Rendering vs Read

The [predictive-coding](/wiki/predictive-coding) account describes the brain as a generative model. Pointing that model at a person produces a complete, detailed response at zero cost. The felt quality of the response supplies no marker distinguishing generation from observation.

A **rendering** is produced by the model. A **read** comes from asking the person.

Surprise distinguishes the operations. A rendering draws from your own priors and cannot tell you something new about the other person. An ask can return an answer you did not already have.

"Could this have surprised me?" is therefore a [provenance](/wiki/provenance) question. It distinguishes an answer generated internally from one retrieved through contact.

## The Tripwire Sentence

**"I already know what they're going to say"** identifies the moment the two operations have become confused.

Before a customer call, a request or a difficult conversation, the sentence reports that the simulation has run and its output has been stored as the other person's answer. It is true about the rendering and unverified about the person, but the speaker cannot feel the difference.

Arguing with that answer runs more simulation. Checking its origin does something else: it identifies the answer as generated, with confidence supplied by the model's fluency rather than by the person.

## When the Rendering Absorbs Years

One documented example lasted nearly two years. A founder developed a product largely within his own thinking and AI conversations. The recurring objection, "isn't this just a wrapper?", was raised and answered in that loop. He could simulate both a customer's objection and the customer's satisfaction with the reply.

The first actual customer conversation asked how the product differed from an off-the-shelf chatbot with custom prompts. There was no answer that worked in the encounter. The earlier work had optimized against an imagined user.

Each internal answer had increased coherence without supplying a reason to stop. Only an external sample ended the loop. One conversation returned more information in an hour than a hundred renderings had returned in two years.

The failure can therefore extend far beyond a mistaken prediction about a phone call or queue. A simulation that never meets a test can continue consuming years.

## The Imagined Judge

The simulated person can also become a standing audience that rejects every possible request in advance. That audience is usually not a memory of anyone who actually responded.

Will noticed the difference as his [expected-value estimates](/wiki/ev-sensor-calibration) changed through exposure:

> "I feel like my EV sensors are readjusting to feeling like, hey, if I do this, I'll be able to convince somebody that it's valuable — rather than them challenging me all the time. Because them challenging me was actually me myself challenging myself in my mind."

The challenges he expected had been supplied by himself. His estimator had spent years learning from rehearsed rejections that never occurred.

This makes the estimator and the generator of its training labels the same model. Training on its own output reinforces the existing priors with increasing confidence. The imagined judge becomes harsher over time and softens only after actual contact.

None of this changes the response rates in the world. Reality does not adjust to the internally rehearsed estimate of whether an ask is worthwhile.

## Contact Collapses the Rendering in Minutes

A rendering is rerun whenever its topic arises, in as much detail as anxiety demands. It has no stopping condition because another coherent scenario can always be added. An actual encounter can finish in minutes and leave a result that can be reused.

A clinic visit imagined as a four-hour wait took five minutes. The conclusion was "It's a good lesson to follow reality contact." An hour without a phone was less boring than its anticipation. A multi-hop transit journey remained intimidating for months as an imagined graph, then one boarding resolved it:

> "The first traversal simultaneously completed the trip and learned the topology; the route is now a known reusable affordance rather than an abstract burden."

The first traversal performs two jobs. It completes the trip and establishes what the route is actually like. A first call, ask or message does the same: it accomplishes the action and reveals its actual cost, response and distribution of possible outcomes.

Later attempts inherit that knowledge. Repeating an imagined traversal a hundred times produces no such map.

[Reality Contact](/wiki/reality-contact) describes the same change when "they want an AI agent platform" becomes "we just need to automate these three repetitive tasks" after one meeting. A simulation can occupy months while the sample takes an hour.

## The Ask Is the Instrument

Whether another person will pay, agree or show up requires a measurement of that person's response. The ask is the one instrument that supplies it.

Willingness to pay cannot be simulated even in principle. It depends on the person's actual budget, alternatives and constraints at a resolution the internal model does not contain.

The answer also supplies a labeled example for the [EV sensor](/wiki/ev-sensor-calibration): an action paired with its outcome. A rendering supplies its own label, so it is more misleading than an unlabeled example.

"The market" expands the same problem into a faceless crowd. An actual person supplies identifiable constraints, vocabulary, a budget range and a possible next conversation. The relevant person is the first customer by name, rather than "someone like the first customer." The latter is another rendering borrowing the real person's identity. The named person can answer.

## Simulation Debt

[Anxiety](/wiki/anxiety) is proportional to simulation time divided by reality-contact frequency. Imagined conversations, queues and judges populate the simulation side of that ratio.

Each one remains an open task the system continues servicing without an answer. Their combined load is experienced as anxiety:

> "There's also a meter for hallucinations, because basically if you overuse your cognition without reality contact, there's like an anxiety bar… how you get rid of that is you close the gap between your thinking and reality."

Further simulation does not reduce that load. Only a read closes the outstanding rendering, so the discharge requires an action rather than an additional insight.

The process can operate during a real conversation too. A neutral face provides little information, and the missing response is filled in as disapproval. Although the person is physically present, the unsaid parts are still generated from the same priors and arrive with the same certainty. This produces the anxiety article's self-fulfilling loop.

Whiteboarding, architecture or an AI discussion can then substitute for showing the work to a stranger. Those lower-anxiety activities feel sufficient because the simulated stranger has already supplied the answer.
