
What It Is
You write down piece A of a problem, freeing space to think about piece B. Once both are on the page, you can consider their relationship without having to keep reconstructing either one. Pieces C, D and E can be added while the earlier work remains available.
Journaling externalizes working memory so that reasoning can extend beyond what fits in the mind at once. Working memory holds approximately 4–7 items. A problem requiring more than seven pieces cannot be solved entirely in the head; the page holds pieces that attention is not currently processing.
The record helps during the thinking itself, as well as providing something to consult later.

The Working Memory Bottleneck
Consider a project with several interacting components. While thinking about A, you realize B also matters and bring it into working memory. A gets displaced as the seven-item limit is exceeded. Then you need A again to understand its relationship with C. Attention keeps swapping pieces, losing the point it had reached and forgetting relevant considerations.
Writing the components down changes that operation. A and B remain visible together, so their relationship can be recorded. C, D and E can be added without deleting the earlier descriptions. Working memory processes the part currently being read while the page retains the rest.
Progressive externalization makes arbitrarily complex problems tractable in this way. The current operation still fits within a small working-memory window, but the context no longer has to fit there with it.
Why "Just Think Harder" Fails
Concentration does not expand the biological capacity. Trying to hold fifteen pieces through greater effort still exceeds a seven-item limit, as a program requiring 16MB cannot run in 4MB merely because its user wants it to. Journaling supplies external storage and removes that constraint on the problem being developed.
The Three Types of Journaling
1. The Braindump (Daily Preprocessing)
The Braindump transfers whatever occupies attention to the page without requiring structure or filtering. This frees working memory before the day's thinking. Afterward, the material can be read and processed instead of continually held in mind.
2. Problem-Solving Journals (Active Thinking)
A problem-solving journal begins with the problem at the top of the page. The next entries state what is understood and what remains unclear. Hypotheses can then be written, tested on paper and followed by the result of each test. Repeating this process develops the solution.
The visible record makes the reasoning itself debuggable. An assumption can be identified, a break in the logic revisited and an already-explored path distinguished from a new one.
3. Longitudinal Journals (Pattern Recognition)
To learn what distinguishes good workdays from bad ones, a month supplies thirty days with dozens of variables each: hundreds of data points. Those cannot be held together in working memory.
A journal allows the entries to be marked as good or bad days, then examined in groups. Common factors among the good days can be recorded, followed by common factors among the bad days and a comparison between them. Working memory handles one chunk; the journal retains the other chunks and the results already found. This resembles streaming computation, in which a large record is processed piece by piece.
Developing Complex Thoughts
A vague intuition may fit in the mind while its development does not. Expanding it mentally adds relationships until earlier ones are lost. Written development can proceed over several sessions:

Each addition fits in working memory, while the full thought grows beyond it. Genuinely complex ideas cannot be developed entirely in the head. The articles in this wiki depended on dozens of journal sessions that progressively built their complexity.
The Questions Framework
A targeted question gives the session a search to perform. “Journal about your day” leaves that search unspecified; a forcing-function question makes the next operation clearer.
For debugging, the prompts identify a mechanism, a required condition or an alternative explanation:
- “What is the mechanism causing X?”
- “What would need to be true for Y to work?”
- “What are 3 hypotheses for why Z failed?”
For planning, they externalize the pieces and examine their order:
- “What are all the pieces required for this project?”
- “What's the critical path?”
- “What's the highest-leverage action right now?”
For pattern recognition, they compare conditions or direct attention toward something avoided:
- “What made today effective?”
- “What was different about days when X worked vs when X failed?”
- “What am I avoiding thinking about?”
The avoided subject is usually the most important one. Writing the question and answering it on the page lets working memory carry out the search while the answer remains available for further processing.
The Externalization Principle
An overwhelming problem probably exceeds working-memory capacity. The feeling reports that the system state does not fit in the available buffer.
Putting all the related material on the page frees that buffer. The scope becomes visible and is usually smaller than it felt. Scanning the items reveals priorities; reasoning with the retained context makes the next action clear. The activation cost of starting drops from 6 units to 2 because the cognitive preparation has been externalized.
Why Physical Beats Digital
Both media support this work, with different advantages:

The most effective arrangement uses a physical journal for daily dumps and active problem-solving, then digital storage for long-term knowledge such as this wiki. Each medium supports a different part of the process.
Integration with Other Systems
Tracking supplies numbers; journal entries supply the circumstances that help interpret them. The Braindump applies journaling to morning preparation, while Working Memory explains the capacity it extends.
Writing expected-value calculations makes their variables available together. Writing state transitions makes those transitions inspectable. Externalizing a task's complexity also lowers the starting cost involved in procrastination. The journal supplies the record on which these operations can run.
Common Failure Modes
Waiting for Insights
A blank page can invite waiting for an insight worth recording. Externalization is itself what generates the insight. Starting with a forcing-function question gives the page material to work on before inspiration arrives.
Trying to Make It Pretty
Concern about prose, organization or coherence adds a publishing standard to a thinking process. The record needs to hold the pieces well enough to reason with them. It can be messy while doing that job; presentation is not the source of its value.
Not Re-Reading
A collection of unread entries cannot reveal patterns across time. A weekly review returns to the previous week's record and compares what happened. That review performs the longitudinal analysis that writing alone leaves unfinished.
Examples in Practice
Will's Morning Protocol
Will spends ten minutes each morning writing whatever is occupying his mind: concerns, ideas, tasks and feelings, without structure or filtering. Afterward, working memory is clear enough to see the priorities and begin work. The completed dump has reduced the activation cost before the work session starts.
Debugging Terra Collapse
After Terra, the crypto project, collapsed, Will journaled about what had happened, why it had happened and what to do next. The page retained variables and emotions that were too complex to manage together in his head.
With that material externalized, he saw staying in crypto as negative expected value and building Idyllic as positive expected value, aligned with his skills and a market opportunity. The decision became clear through the written comparison. He could not have reached that clarity while trying to hold all of the complexity mentally.
Building This Wiki
Each article began with journal sessions. Will wrote what he understood about a concept, identified gaps, read source material and journaled about it. Connections to other concepts then informed an article structure, which was refined over further sessions until it became a wiki page.
The journal serves as the build environment. The published article is the accumulated work made into a finished output.
